How to compress a PDF to an exact size

    1. Select your PDF or drop it on the page.
    2. Type the size limit in KB shown on the form, for example 300. For 2 MB, type 2000.
    3. Click "Compress PDF". Several settings are tried and the best one under your limit is kept.
    4. Download the PDF and upload it. A message confirms that it is under your limit.

Government portals, exam boards, embassies and job sites often refuse files above a fixed size, and the limit changes from one form to the next: 100 KB here, 300 KB there, 2 MB elsewhere. Ordinary compressors only offer "low" or "high" compression, so you end up trying again and again.

This tool works the other way around. You give the limit, and the compressor searches for the mildest settings that reach it. Images are compressed first and the text stays sharp. If the target is very small, the pages are turned into compact images as a last step, and you are told if the limit cannot be reached at all.

    About the file formats

    PDF (Portable Document Format)

Created by Adobe in 1993, PDF is the standard for sharing documents that must look identical on every screen and printer. It embeds fonts, images and layout in one file and supports passwords, forms and digital signatures.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF to a specific size?

Select the PDF, type the limit in KB in the "Target size" field and click "Compress PDF". The file you download is equal to or smaller than the size you typed.

How do I enter a size in MB?

Multiply by 1000: 1 MB = 1000, 2 MB = 2000, 5 MB = 5000. Counting 1000 instead of 1024 keeps the file under the limit whichever way the portal counts.

The portal still says my file is too large. What can I do?

Check whether the limit applies to each file or to all files together. If it is a total, divide it by the number of documents and compress each one to that size. You can also delete blank or unneeded pages with Remove pages before compressing.

Can the tool make a PDF bigger to reach a minimum size?

No, it only makes files smaller. Portals that set a minimum (often 10 or 20 KB) accept any normal scan, so this is rarely a problem.

    Is MajorPDF free to use?

Yes, completely free. There is no registration and no watermark is added to your files.

    Are my files safe?

Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection and deleted automatically after 1 hour(s). After downloading you can also delete them immediately with one click.

What is the maximum file size?

Each file can be up to 50 MB.
